Acoustic Electric Guitars
An acoustic electric guitar is an acoustic guitar fitted with special acoustic pickups, a microphone, or transducers.
When applied to classical guitars, some type of transducer or microphones is always used because conventional pickups are not capable of picking up vibrations of non-magnetic materials. Standard acoustic electric guitars are typically fitted with piezoelectric pickups. Due to this, they require a preamplifier incorporated into the guitar body to amplify the signal before it's sent to the main amplifier. This preamp may include tone controls. This is usually an equalizer with up to six frequency bands.
Acoustic electric guitars are commonly used in folk and classical music since they project the brilliant sound an acoustic guitar with the added benefit of increased volume through the amplification process.
Examples of bands that use acoustic electric guitars are R.E.M. and Coldplay.
